Composition – Foundational

The Composition - Foundational course introduces key skills for aspiring composers, focusing on:

  • Crafting original melodies with clear expression

  • Building harmonic progressions that support melodic ideas

  • Understanding and applying musical forms in compositions

  • Exploring rhythmic and metric variations for added complexity

  • Basic arranging and orchestration for solo instruments and ensembles

Composition – Intermediate

The Composition - Intermediate course deepens compositional skills with a focus on:

  • Creating advanced melodic themes with motivic development

  • Employing chromatic and non-functional harmony, and exploring distant key modulations

  • Writing in complex forms like sonata, fugue, and variation sets

  • Using advanced rhythmic techniques such as polyrhythms and irregular meters

  • Orchestrating for diverse large ensembles with extended instrumental techniques

Composition – Advanced

The Composition - Advanced course challenges students to refine their artistry, focusing on:

​

  • Developing a distinctive compositional style with innovative approaches

  • Mastering advanced harmonic, contrapuntal, and structural techniques in large-scale works

  • Utilising contemporary methods like serialism, minimalism, and aleatoric processes

  • Writing for large ensembles with extended orchestration and unconventional instrument combinations

  • Exploring multimedia composition, integrating soundscapes, electronics, and visual

 

This course prepares students to create professional-level compositions demonstrating originality and technical sophistication.
